The first, exploratory, field season of the Western Sahara Project was conducted in autumn 2002. The second season was undertaken in spring 2005, since which one or two field seasons have been undertaken per year. The 2002 and spring 2005 field seasons focused on reconnaissance work, the aim of which was to identify sites of potential interested in the northern and southern regions of the Polisario-controlled areas respectively. Subsequent field seasons have involved a combination of excavation, detailed survey work, and reconnaissance.
